It is the first such lake in the United States built specifically to create a course for competitive rowing. Community access to the lake is available at the boat launch area adjacent to Route 27 just south of Kingston, NJ. The boat launch area is open to the public from dawn to dusk. No overnight parking is permitted in the boat launch area. Mercer County Marina offers kayak, row boat and pedal boat rentals. The marina's boathouse and three outdoor lakefront pavilions are available for catered events.

The boathouse holds up to 80 and the pavilions hold up to people. The Finn Casperson Rowing Center on the north shore of the lake is home to the Princeton National Rowing Association and is the only Olympic training site in the state of New Jersey, according to the county. In addition to lake facilities, Mercer County Park has extensive land facilities including soccer fields, picnic areas, hiking trails, sand volleyball courts and tennis courts.

Located in Princeton near the campus of Princeton University, Carnegie Lake is a long, narrow reservoir named after American steel tycoon Andrew Carnegie. The lake is used for sailboats, rowing and catch-and-release fishing.

The Carnegie Lake Rowing Association and university's rowing team call it home and hold practice and events on the lake. In the winter, the lake is used for ice skating. Spring Lake is located in the northwestern section of John A. Roebling County Park in Hamilton.

As its name indicates, the lake is fed by a spring.
