Michael Morpurgo. General Fiction. The First World War ,. The ending was where I realised how good the book was in truth. Sometimes it only takes one chapter to make sense of all the previous.

Anyone who is my age or younger would probably enjoy this read. Michela Morpurgo is traditionally a children's book author but many of his books I have read I would not consider children's books. This one is fine for all audiences though it has a good theme and is a book for those who want a story with a satisfying ending.

If i could say one thing to Michael Morpurgo it would be 'don't stop writing, I've loved almost every book of yours!

Jan 30, Francesca rated it really liked it. Not gonna lie, the first half of this book was quite boring. But little by little, he added scenes that made me read it even more. I honestly love the writing style of this book. It's like watching an interesting series on Netflix that you can't stop binge watching. This book is easy to understand. The characters, Gracie and Daniel, reminded me of my mindset as a child.

I was so gullible, I would believe almost everything people say to me. Like how Gracie and Daniel believed the stories about th Not gonna lie, the first half of this book was quite boring.

Like how Gracie and Daniel believed the stories about the birdman. When in reality, the birdman was a kind old fellow that just needed some help to save the whales, at least that's how I remembered it. Even if they believed the stories about the birdman making people sick, these kids still overcame that fear conditioned into their heads. They went to the birdman's house and realized there was nothing to be afraid of. The lessons I learned from this story are: to never judge a book by its cover, seek for the truth before making judgements, and to stand up for what's right.

These may or may not be the lessons pointed out, but these are what I've learned and recalled when I read this book. May 16, Victoria Sigsworth rated it it was amazing. I have read a couple of Michael Morpurgo books before and they are always excellent.

Again, looking for books to read at home during lockdown, remembered I hadn't read this but had seen the stage play which was excellent and have the film recorded waiting for me to watch after reading the book.

I have to say this one is my favourite so far. If I could give it 6 I would. This story is well paced from the get go and the pace builds as the end is reached. Adults as well as children will enjoy this s I have read a couple of Michael Morpurgo books before and they are always excellent. Adults as well as children will enjoy this story. The reader is lost straight away in the story and as you read, your imagination just holds you in it and you forget about reality.

It is cleverly crafted putting together myth, war and a child's thinking and makes for a brilliant read as the story brings all these together at the end along with an environmental message about whales at the end and at the moment this makes the book even more current as this issue is at the forefront of our lives. Simply a brilliant read and as I say, don't be put off thinking this book is for children or you really will have missed a fabulous read.

Sep 03, Suyen HU rated it really liked it. I knew this book would bring me to tears sooner or later once I opened it. We used to go sailing once or twice a week before we started working for Snowflake. We painted the boat, served the engine, we sailed on the sea and we enjoyed every moment we could when we were down in Lymington.

But all the memories are so faint now like all these things were only in my dreams. In the book Why the Whales Came, the story is set in the seaside around , it talks about swans, gulls, shells, the calm weath I knew this book would bring me to tears sooner or later once I opened it. In the book Why the Whales Came, the story is set in the seaside around , it talks about swans, gulls, shells, the calm weather for sailing, the angry sea, the waves, the storm, boats, and sailing Maybe, it's about time for me to think about getting back to my own life so I can read, write and talk about all the beautiful things like I used to do before, including English poems, history, historic buildings, paintings, arts and culture.

During my spare time, I'm still happy to do some events and make beautiful books for Snowflake but in the UK only for time being. I love all those who could see the magic in books. May 21, Jacobine rated it really liked it. The story made me feel excited because I wanted to know why the whales came but also scared because this story happened during the scary world war 1.

The story made me think about the world war 1 and how terrible it must have been to be in it. I liked the book because it was interesting, and at the end of the book you figured out why the whales came. I would recommend this book because it is scary and also exciting at the same time. I think the recommended reading age is because it is a short and small book, but not too hard and not too easy to read.

I would give this book an 8 out of Jul 17, Alexander rated it liked it. One of the reasons I love Morpurgo as a writer so much is his agility at writing for different age groups; he can appeal to more emotionally mature readers and much younger readers, as he does with Why the Whales Came. May 29, Rob Beck rated it really liked it.

Very enjoyable; a fast, easy and absorbing read that really made me feel like I was on the Isles of Scilly at the dawn of the first world war. Some of the scenes were very evocative, particularly when Gracie and Daniel went out fishing on their own. Without giving anything away, I'd read the book again just to re-live that experience!

The only inconsistency I spotted was that the Narwhal that was found by the Birdman, Gracie, and Daniel was constantly referred to as a she, yet it had a tusk which Very enjoyable; a fast, easy and absorbing read that really made me feel like I was on the Isles of Scilly at the dawn of the first world war. The only inconsistency I spotted was that the Narwhal that was found by the Birdman, Gracie, and Daniel was constantly referred to as a she, yet it had a tusk which Mr Wellbeloved I think stated was only to be found on males.

In the protagonists' defence, the World Wildlife Fund has just advised me via the power of Google that they are commonly not exclusively found on males, and any book that gets you researching the subject matter must be doing something right ; Much better than War Horse. Sep 05, Janette Townend rated it it was amazing. A great story by a great story teller. Gracie and Daniel are two young friends living on Bryher an island in the Sillies during the first world war, Their hobby is making and sailing model boats and through their hobby they meet the Bird Man who they have been told to keep away from.

There is a lot of superstition around the Bird Man who is a mystery to most of the inhabitants, he lives alone in a cottage away from the village with his dog Prince. He once lived on Samson Island which peopl A great story by a great story teller. He once lived on Samson Island which people said had a curse upon it and that his mother was a witch. Gracie and her mother have to cope when her father joins the navy and to try to help Daniel and Gracie go out in boat to fish, they get lost in the fog and the pace of the story hots up when they become stranded on the cursed island of Samson.

This is a story rich in mystery, superstition and emotion sure to grip a young reader. Feb 23, Howdoidothis rated it it was amazing. Im sad its over! The environmental story telling pulled through with allowing an easy imagination of Gracie and Daniel's home. The story is told through Gracie's eyes, and is quite slow at first but does a good job of setting the stakes and setting right before going headfirst into the climax of the story.

It's a fun and relaxing read over all, and perhaps my only complaint is that the whales c Im sad its over! It's a fun and relaxing read over all, and perhaps my only complaint is that the whales came in too late yes I'm going to be petty about that. The narwhals on the cover had me all excited shh but that still doesn't take away from its charm. From Canada to U. Published by Scholastic Inc, Used - Hardcover. Hard Cover.
